  • Varcaturo centre is the local starting point for a day out.

Montagna Spaccata gives your day a clear destination beyond the local centre. It sits on Monte Orlando in Gaeta, within Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park.

The site’s limestone cliff has three vertical fissures; visitors can explore Montagna Spaccata and Grotta del Turco. Local tradition connects the fissures’ opening to the death of Christ. The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Trinity was founded by Benedictine monks in the 11th century.

A boulder broke away in 1434 and lodged about 40 metres above the sea. The Chapel of the Crucifix was built on it.

On the stairs descending through the central fissure, visitors can see the so-called Mano del Turco, a five-finger impression in the rock. A legend attributes it to a miraculous event; the geological explanation is rainwater-driven karst activity.

Grotta del Turco takes its name from Saracens who used the cavity as a staging point for coastal raids in the 9th and 10th centuries, until their defeat at the Battle of Garigliano in 915. The guide to Montagna Spaccata from Varcaturo covers practical details for planning a visit.

At Montagna Spaccata, the sanctuary has parking and restrooms. It prohibits smoking, food, animals and music, and notes that disabled access presents objective difficulties. The sanctuary asks for a voluntary donation to help cover maintenance costs; it does not set a fixed admission price.

If you are travelling by public transport, start at Formia station: take a COTRAL bus from Piazza Mattei toward Gaeta Piazza Traniello, get off at the last stop on Corso Italia, then continue on foot toward Mount Orlando.

The sanctuary estimates the walk at 30 minutes. Buses may drop visitors at the roundabout but cannot park in the surrounding area.

From Serapo or Lungomare Caboto, the short route goes uphill via Via Munazio Planco and takes 10 minutes. The scenic route from Old Gaeta via Via Lieto and Mount Orlando takes 50 minutes and is recommended for trekking.

By car from Gaeta Vecchia, follow Lungomare Caboto, then Via Firenze and Via Munazio Planco; parking is available in a small square on the left or along the uphill road during peak periods.
