Where is Castello di Arechi?

Castello di Arechi sits on Colle Bonadies, overlooking Salerno from about 300 metres above sea level. Its address is Via Croce, 84125 Salerno, placing the castle on elevated ground above the city.

The fortress grew in stages. Its earliest phase is attributed to the Byzantines around the 6th century, and Lombard prince Arechi II expanded its defences in the 8th century. Later changes came during the Norman, Angevin and Aragonese periods. After transformations in the 16th century, the castle’s defensive role declined.

The Province of Salerno acquired the site in 1960. Restoration and archaeological excavation followed, and the complex returned to public use from the 1980s, with complete reopening in the 2000s.
